Two airport security officers appeared at the cabin door before Derek finished his sentence.
Lauren straightened.
Bradley crossed his arms.
Derek did not move.
The taller officer stepped forward.
"Sir, we're going to need you to gather your belongings."
Derek looked at him calmly.
"On what grounds?"
"There's a dispute over seating and the crew has requested—"
"The crew has requested that a man with a valid boarding pass for this seat give it up for a man whose boarding pass says 2C." Derek paused.
"Is that correct?"
The officer glanced at Lauren.
Lauren said nothing.
From across the aisle, Helen Parker closed her book completely.
"Young man," she said, her voice carrying the quiet authority of someone who had silenced a hundred classrooms, "I watched this entire thing.
That gentleman sat down first.
He has his boarding pass.
I'd like to know why security was called before anyone even checked the system properly."
Bradley turned toward her.
"Ma'am, this doesn't concern you."
"It concerns everyone on this plane," Helen said.
Then Derek reached into his briefcase.
Not for his boarding pass this time.
He pulled out a single folded document and set it on the armrest without a word.
Lauren's eyes dropped to it.
So did the officer's.
Bradley went very still.
The Blue Ridge Airways logo was printed clearly at the top.
