Chapter 2: Whatever You Think You Saw

PART 2 ⬇️

Marcus didn't move for a long moment.

Then he picked up his desk phone and said two words.

"Pull everything."

I didn't know what that meant.

But the way he said it made Lily press her face into my shoulder.

A man I had never seen before appeared in the doorway within minutes.

Suit.

No expression.

He set a thin folder on the desk without being asked.

Marcus opened it.

He looked at one page.

Then he looked at me.

"How long have you worked here?"

"Eight months, sir."

"Has anyone ever asked you to leave your phone unattended?

Asked you to charge it in a specific place?"

My chest tightened.

"Marta told me the laundry outlet was the most reliable.

She said the others trip the breaker."

Something shifted in his face.

"Marta told you that."

"Yes, sir.

Two weeks ago."

He closed the folder slowly.

"Your phone has a passcode?"

"Yes."

"Vanessa is good with technology."

He said it quietly.

Not to me.

Almost to himself.

Then his personal cell rang.

He looked at the screen.

His jaw tightened in a way I had never seen on any employer's face before.

He answered.

"I was wondering when you'd call."

A pause.

Then a woman's voice — sharp, controlled, unmistakable even from where I stood.

May you like

"Marcus.

Whatever you think you saw — you need to delete it."
