Chapter 2: The Woman in the Photograph

Part 2 ⬇️

Hannah got into the SUV.

She told herself it was because of Emma's crying.

That was the only reason.

The three girls were buckled in beside her, and the moment Hannah sat down, all three went quiet.

Lily leaned her small head against Hannah's arm like she had done it a thousand times before.

Hannah didn't move.

Dominic sat across from her, watching.

"Where are you taking me?" she asked.

"Somewhere we can talk."

"We can talk here."

"No," he said.

"We can't."

He pulled out his phone and turned the screen toward her.

It was a photograph.

Hannah's breath stopped.

The woman in the photo had Hannah's eyes.

Hannah's jaw.

Hannah's exact shade of dark hair.

But it wasn't Hannah.

"Who is that?" she whispered.

Dominic's voice was very quiet.

"That was my wife."

Hannah looked up.

"Was?"

He didn't answer right away.

Grace reached over and touched Hannah's hand with two small fingers.

"Mama," she said softly.

Dominic looked out the rain-streaked window.

"She d*ed eleven months after they were born.

We never found out why the girls wouldn't speak." He paused.

"Until today."

Hannah stared at the photograph.

Her hands were shaking.

"I don't understand.

I've never met her.

I've never met you."

Dominic turned back.

"I know." His jaw tightened.

"That's what frightens me."

Then his phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

Every trace of emotion left his face.

"Don't say a word," he told her.

He answered.

A man's voice came through the speaker, low and deliberate.

"You found her, didn't you."

It wasn't a question.
