Chapter 2: What the Floor Was Hiding

Part 2 ⬇️

Gabriel pulled the mattress off the frame.

Nothing.

He yanked the lining from the small dresser drawers.

Nothing.

Then Tommy crouched beside the bed and pressed the loose corner of the linoleum floor.

A single folded piece of paper slid out from underneath.

Gabriel snatched it.

It was not a federal document.

It was not a list of names or a map of the estate.

It was a medical bill.

Dated 7 months ago.

A clinic in Buffalo.

The patient name had been torn away — but the diagnosis line had not.

Gabriel read it twice.

His jaw went rigid.

"Boss?" Tommy said quietly.

"What does it say?"

Gabriel did not answer.

He turned the paper over.

On the back, in small, careful handwriting, were four words.

*He cannot know this.*

Tommy took a step forward.

"Boss, who wrote—"

"Get out."

"But—"

"Get.

Out."

Tommy left without another word.

Gabriel stood alone in the empty room, the paper shaking slightly in his hand.

Hazel had not been a rat.

She had not been running from him.

She had been running to protect him from something — something she believed would get her k*lled if he ever found out.

And now he had found out.

He reached for his phone and dialed the one man who could trace a ghost.

"Find her," Gabriel said.

"Tonight."
