Chapter 2: The Document in Her Pocket

Charlotte didn't fight back.

She let them drag her.

Let them stare.

Because she needed them to see exactly what was happening in this lobby.

Every second of it.

The socialite finally released her grip and stepped back, smoothing her silk gown like she had just removed a piece of trash from her path.

"Security!" she called out, snapping her fingers.

"Remove her from the building."

Two guards moved forward.

Charlotte slowly rose to her feet.

Her hands were shaking — but not from fear.

She reached into the front pocket of her jacket and pulled out a single folded document.

"Before you touch me," Charlotte said quietly, "you might want to read that."

The nearest guard took it.

His face changed the moment his eyes hit the top line.

The socialite laughed.

"Whatever that is, it means nothing here."

"It's the ownership transfer," Charlotte said.

"Signed.

Notarized.

Filed with the court three days ago."

The lobby went completely still.

The socialite's smile didn't disappear all at once.

It faded — slowly — as she looked around the room and realized every single person was now staring at her.

"That's…

not possible," she whispered.

"My mother made sure it was," Charlotte said.

Then a phone rang.

It was coming from the socialite's purse.

She looked down at the screen — and her face went white.
