Chapter 2: The Name She Never Stopped Saying

Part 2 ⬇️
I knocked.
The coughing stopped.
Silence.
Then small footsteps crossed the floor — light and quick, the way a child moves when she doesn't know she should be afraid.
The door opened.
She looked up at me with those gray-green eyes.
Neither of us moved.
Then she turned her head toward the back room.
"Mommy.
There's a man at the door."
A long pause.
Then Elena's voice, barely above a whisper.
"What does he look like?"
The little girl studied my face the way children do — honest, unguarded, missing nothing.
"Old.
Serious.
He has sad eyes."
I heard something fall in the back room.
Then silence again.
When Elena finally appeared in the doorway, she was thinner than I remembered.
Pale.
One hand gripping the wall to steady herself.
She saw me and went completely still.
"Luca."
I hadn't heard my name in her voice in seven years.
"Elena."
She looked past me into the hallway — checking, the way someone does when they've spent years being careful.
"You shouldn't be here."
"You should have told me."
Her jaw tightened.
"There was nothing to tell."
I looked at the little girl standing between us.
Then I looked back at Elena.
"What's her name?"
Elena's eyes filled.
She didn't answer.
She didn't have to.
The little girl looked up at her mother, then back at me.
"My name is Sofia," she said quietly.
"Sofia Russo."
Elena closed her eyes.
And I understood exactly why she had run.

What Elena told Luca next — and what she had been hiding for seven years — is more heartbreaking than anyone expected.
