Chapter 2: The Woman at the End of the Hall

**— PART 2 —**

The painting swung open.

Behind it was a door — heavy, steel-framed, sealed with a keypad lock.

Emma's hands were shaking.

She pressed her ear against the cold metal.

Silence.

Then, so faint she almost missed it — a small voice.

"Please…

I want my dad."

Ethan.

Emma spun around, ready to run back to the ballroom, ready to scream William's name across the entire room if she had to.

Isabella was already standing at the end of the hallway.

Perfectly still.

Perfectly calm.

Champagne glass in hand.

"Emma." Her voice was soft.

Almost kind.

"You're in a part of the house that isn't yours."

"Ethan is behind that door." Emma's voice came out steadier than she felt.

"I heard him."

Isabella smiled.

It didn't reach her eyes.

"You heard pipes.

Old buildings make strange sounds." She tilted her head slightly.

"You've been under a lot of stress.

I've noticed."

"I know what I heard."

Isabella stepped closer.

One slow step.

Then another.

"William trusts me completely," she said quietly.

"Who do you think he'll believe?

His wife — or the help?"

Emma didn't move.

But in her pocket, her fingers had already found her phone.

She had pressed record before Isabella said a single word.
