Chapter 2: The Note She Almost Didn't Open

PART 2 ⬇️

After the police left, the restaurant stayed silent for a long moment.

Then Valerie's legs gave out.

She sat down hard in the nearest chair, hands shaking, staring at the cracked phone still sitting on the table.

One of the waitresses brought her a glass of water.

She didn't touch it.

Thomas sat beside her, close enough that their shoulders were touching.

Nick hadn't moved either.

He was watching Valerie the way a child watches an adult who might suddenly change their mind.

"How long?" Valerie finally whispered.

Thomas looked at the table.

"Since last winter."

She closed her eyes.

Last winter.

Thomas had broken his wrist last winter.

Daniel had said he fell off his bike.

She had signed the hospital forms without asking a single question.

Then something shifted in the room.

The restaurant manager approached quietly and placed a folded piece of paper on the table in front of Valerie.

"A woman left this before the police arrived.

She said you would need it."

Valerie opened it.

Her face went white.

It was a name.

An address.

And a single sentence written in handwriting she almost recognized.

*He did this before.

To someone else.

And I have proof.*

Valerie looked up.

The manager shook his head slowly.

"She was already gone."
