Chapter 2: The Ring on the Hand

She walked out without another word.

Not crying.

Not running.

Just gone.

Nathaniel stood in that corridor holding her folded apron like it weighed more than anything in the room.

Evelyn touched his arm.

"Let her go.

This is for the best."

He pulled away.

"Don't."

The security team began reviewing the footage in a side office.

Nathaniel followed.

Two board members followed him.

Evelyn's father blocked the doorway.

"Nathaniel.

Think about what this looks like.

The reception.

The press.

That journalist is still out there."

"Move, Gerald."

The footage loaded.

The timestamp read 9:14 PM.

Everyone leaned in.

The camera showed the corridor outside the coat room.

A figure in dark clothing moved quickly, stopped at Claire's bag, and slipped something inside.

The figure turned just slightly.

Nathaniel went very still.

He recognized the bracelet.

He recognized the corridor.

And he recognized the ring on the hand that dropped it.

He had seen that ring every day for three years.

He turned around slowly.

Evelyn was still standing in the doorway.

Still pale.

Still composed.

But her right hand was pressed flat against her side.

"Evelyn."

She didn't answer.

"Where is your bracelet?"
