Chapter 2: The Photograph on the Floor

The word hit me like a physical blow.

I couldn't move.

I couldn't speak.

I just stood there staring at that tiny face — and felt the floor shift beneath my feet.

Grace slowly raised her eyes to mine.

She wasn't angry.

She wasn't defiant.

She looked exhausted in a way that went bone-deep, like a woman who had been carrying something unbearable for a very long time.

"Nathan," she said quietly.

"I tried to tell you.

Four years ago.

I tried."

"She's lying." Victoria's voice cut across the kitchen, sharp and fast.

"She's a housekeeper.

She's desperate.

She'll say anything to save herself right now."

But Grace didn't flinch.

She reached into the small front pocket of her uniform with a trembling hand and placed something on the tile floor between us.

A photograph.

I recognized it immediately.

It was taken at the company retreat — five years ago.

Grace and I.

Before Victoria.

Before the engagement.

Before everything I thought I knew about my life.

My hands were shaking as I picked it up.

"There's a document too," Grace whispered.

"In the safe.

The one she told you I was stealing from." She paused.

"I wasn't stealing, Nathan.

I was trying to get it back before she destroyed it."

Victoria took one step toward Grace — and I stepped between them.

"Don't." My voice came out low and steady in a way I didn't feel.

Victoria's eyes went cold.

"You have no idea what you're protecting," she said softly.

What's in that document — and what has Victoria already done to keep it hidden?
