Chapter 2: The Name He Wasn't Supposed to Hear

The color drained from Diane's face.
On the screen was a video.
Clear.
Steady.
Fifteen seconds of Diane Ashford stepping deliberately toward Lily, one sharp movement of her elbow, and a seven-year-old girl crashing into the crystal centerpiece.
The room had gone quiet without Marcus asking it to.
"That's not what it looks like," Diane said.
Her voice had lost its smoothness.
"It's exactly what it looks like," Marcus said.
Someone in the crowd murmured.
Then another voice.
Then a third.
Diane's husband, Richard Ashford, pushed through from the far side of the room.
He'd seen the screen from ten feet away.
His expression wasn't angry.
It was something worse — calculating.
"Diane." That was all he said.
She turned to him.
"Richard, I can explain—"
"Don't." He held up one hand.
"Not here."
But Marcus wasn't finished.
"I'm sending this to every board member tonight.
Not as a threat.
As a record."
Diane looked at her husband.
Then at the crowd.
Then at Lily, still pressed against Marcus's chest, watching with wide, wet eyes.
"You have no idea what you're starting," Diane said quietly.
"Neither did you," Marcus replied.
"When you put your hands on my daughter."
Richard Ashford pulled out his own phone.
May you like
His face was unreadable.
He stepped away and made a call — and the name he said stopped Marcus cold.
