Chapter 2: Four Words and a Pale Face

Lily's voice dropped even lower.

"He said Dominic Mercer doesn't forget a face.

He said that's not a good thing or a bad thing.

It depends on which side of him you're on."

Norah said nothing.

That night, walking home, she noticed a black car parked across from her building.

It was gone by morning.

She told herself it meant nothing.

Then the envelope arrived.

No stamp.

No return address.

Slipped under the restaurant's staff door at some point during the Thursday lunch rush.

Her name on the front.

Just Norah.

Nothing else.

Inside was a single card.

Four words.

*You have good instincts.*

No signature.

Leo saw her holding it.

His face went pale.

"Where did that come from?"

"I don't know."

He took a step back.

"Norah.

Whatever is happening — I need you to understand I cannot protect you from this."

"I'm not asking you to."

"You don't know what you walked into that night."

She looked at him steadily.

"Neither did Valerie."

Leo opened his mouth.

Closed it.

Then his phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

All the color left his face.

He answered it without a word and walked into his office, shutting the door behind him.

Through the glass, Norah watched him nod twice.

Then slowly turn and look directly at her.
