Chapter 2: The Letter Nobody Was Supposed to Find

Nathaniel crossed the terrace in four steps and pulled his mother out of the jacuzzi himself.

Evelyn collapsed against his chest, shaking violently, her soaked robe leaving a dark stain across his shirt.

"I've got you," he said quietly.

"I've got you, Mom."

Isabella hadn't moved.

She stood perfectly still, watching him with an expression he couldn't read.

Not guilt.

Not fear.

Something closer to calculation.

"Nathaniel." Her voice was smooth.

"This isn't what it looked like."

He didn't answer.

He wrapped his jacket around his mother's shoulders and turned to face Isabella slowly.

"How long?" he asked.

"How long what?"

"How long have you been doing this to her?"

Isabella tilted her head slightly.

"Your mother is confused.

She's been confused for months.

You've seen it yourself."

Evelyn gripped Nathaniel's arm.

"She's been telling the staff I'm losing my mind.

She had Dr.

Harmon sign a letter.

Nathaniel — she's been planning this since before the engagement."

The air between them went still.

Nathaniel looked at Isabella.

"What letter?"

For the first time, something shifted behind Isabella's eyes.

And then his phone rang.

The name on the screen stopped him cold.

It was his lawyer.
