Chapter 2: The House He Never Knew Existed

I took both girls by the hand and walked off that lawn without looking back.
Emma didn't cry.
Lily didn't ask questions.
They just held on.
That broke my heart more than anything Diane had said.
We drove to an address Ethan had never visited.
A house I had purchased three years earlier under my company name.
Fully furnished.
Completely mine.
The girls were asleep before ten.
I was not.
At 11:47 p.m., my phone lit up.
Ethan.
I let it ring.
At 6:14 a.m., I heard a car in the driveway.
He had tracked my phone.
I opened the door before he could knock.
He looked at the house — the size of it, the address, the quiet street — and something shifted in his face.
"Whose place is this?"
"Mine."
He laughed.
The short, dismissive kind.
"Maren, stop.
Whose house is this really?"
"I told you.
Mine.
I bought it.
My name is on the deed."
The laugh faded.
"That's not possible.
You manage a few rental units.
You don't have—"
"I don't manage rentals, Ethan.
I own the company that advises the people who own the buildings.
I have for twelve years."
He went very still.
Then, quietly: "How much?"
I didn't answer.
But behind me, on the kitchen counter, my laptop was open.
And on the screen was a document he was just beginning to read.
His face changed completely.

What Ethan saw on that screen made him sit down without being asked.
