Chapter 2: A Father’s True Motive

The judge looked directly at my daughter.
“The beneficiary is Victor’s seven-year-old child, with her mother appointed as sole trustee until she turns twenty-five.”
Victor shot to his feet.
“That money belongs to my family!”
My daughter flinched.
I pulled her close as the judge’s expression hardened.
“Sit down, Mr.
Hale.”
His attorney grabbed his sleeve.
“Victor, say nothing.”
But Victor pointed at me.
“She planned this.
She manipulated that old woman!”
“I never knew about the inheritance,” I said.
The judge studied him.
“Then how did you?”
Victor froze.
His lawyer slowly released his arm.
The judge removed another paper from the folder.
“This court also received an emergency custody petition filed by Mr.
Hale at 8:12 this morning—minutes after Ms.
Whitaker’s attorney notified him of the estate.”
My breath caught.
Until that moment, Victor had demanded that I keep full custody.
“You didn’t want our daughter,” I whispered.
“You wanted control of her money.”
“That’s a lie,” Victor snapped.
The courtroom doors opened behind us.
An elderly man carrying a leather case stepped inside.
“No, Mr.
Hale.
The lie is what you told Eleanor Whitaker three days before her passing.”
Victor’s face went white.
The man placed a small recorder on the judge’s bench.
Then my daughter whispered, “Mommy…
why is Daddy’s voice on that?”
