Chapter 2: The Envelope Under the Door

PART 2 ⬇️
The car was warm.
Matteo didn't speak for the first two blocks.
Neither did I.
Then he said, "Where do you live?"
I gave him the cross streets.
He didn't react, but the driver's eyes moved briefly to the mirror.
I knew what that neighborhood looked like to someone like Matteo De Luca.
I didn't apologize for it.
When we pulled up, he stepped out first.
I told him that wasn't necessary.
"I'm aware," he said, and walked me to the door anyway.
At the top of the steps, I turned to thank him.
That was when I saw it — a plain white envelope tucked under my door.
No stamp.
No return address.
Just my name written in handwriting I recognized immediately.
My hands went cold.
"Hannah." Matteo was watching my face.
"What is that?"
"Nothing," I said.
The word came out too fast.
He looked at the envelope, then back at me.
He didn't push.
But he didn't leave either.
I waited until his car disappeared before I opened it.
Inside was a single photograph.
Me and David.
Taken recently — outside Lumina, in my uniform, on a night I hadn't seen him anywhere near.
On the back, four words in his handwriting:
*I never really left.*

What David had been hiding — and what it meant for Hannah and Matteo — was only the beginning.
