Chapter 2: What My Mother Kept

I watched the footage twice.
The valet didn't say a word.
He just stepped back.
On the screen, Vanessa walked Noah to the car, opened the door, and pointed inside.
Noah climbed in.
Then she pressed the lock button, checked it once, and walked straight into the restaurant without looking back.
Not once.
My hands were shaking by the time the video ended.
"That's not what happened," Vanessa said behind me.
"He was being difficult.
I was going to go right back out."
"The timestamp says forty-one minutes, Vanessa."
She went quiet.
Noah was still pressed against my chest.
I felt him flinch when he heard her voice.
That's when my mother stepped out of the restaurant.
She took one look at Noah's face.
Then she looked at Vanessa.
"This isn't the first time, is it," she said.
It wasn't a question.
Vanessa's expression shifted.
Something crossed her face that I hadn't seen before.
Fear.
My mother reached into her bag and placed her phone on the hood of the car.
"I think you need to hear this," she said, looking directly at me.
And then she pressed play.
