Chapter 2: The Envelope She Never Threw Away

"When?" I asked again.

Emily didn't answer immediately.

She watched Mia settle the stuffed rabbit across her knees, small fingers smoothing its worn ears.

Then, very quietly: "I tried.

Once."

"Once."

"Three weeks after I left.

I called your office." She paused.

"A woman answered."

Something shifted in my chest.

"She said you were unavailable.

I left my name." Emily's voice stayed flat, controlled.

"You never called back."

I stared at her.

I had no memory of that message.

None.

But I also knew what those weeks had looked like.

The lawyers.

The shareholder meetings.

The assistants fielding every call while I barely slept.

"I never got it."

"I know that now." Her jaw tightened.

"But I didn't know it then.

And two weeks later, I saw the photo."

"What photo?"

Emily reached into the diaper bag.

For a moment I thought she was going to show me something on her phone.

Instead she pulled out a small envelope.

Worn at the corners.

Like it had been handled many times.

She held it but didn't open it.

"You and Claire.

At the Meridian gala.

She was wearing your mother's bracelet, Daniel."

The air left my lungs.

"That was a charity event.

Claire was a guest—"

"She was on your arm." Emily's eyes finally met mine.

"And I was three months along."

Mia looked up at her mother.

Emily smiled down at her.

Steady.

Practiced.

The smile of a woman who had learned to hold herself together in front of a child.

My hands were shaking.

"Who else knows?" I asked.

Emily hesitated just long enough.

"Emily.

Who else knows Mia is mine?"

She looked away.

And that was when my phone buzzed on the seat beside me.

A message from Claire.

*Just landed in Napa early.

Can't wait.
