Chapter 2: What She Whispered

He dropped the bag.

It hit the floor the same way the cup had — sudden, loud, final.

"What happened to her?"

The woman turned slowly.

She smoothed the front of her dress before she answered.

"She dropped the cup.

I was disciplining her."

He was already on his knees beside the little girl.

She grabbed his sleeve with both hands and buried her face against his arm.

She was shaking.

"This is a bruise." His voice was low.

Quiet in a way that was worse than shouting.

"She has a bruise on her arm."

"Children fall."

He looked up at her.

"I was gone four days."

"And I was here managing everything alone.

As usual."

He lifted the little girl carefully and stood.

She wrapped her arms around his neck and would not let go.

"How long has this been happening?"

The woman said nothing.

"How long?"

Still nothing.

But something moved across her face — not guilt.

Something colder than that.

Then the little girl pressed her lips close to his ear.

She whispered something.

His whole body went still.

Whatever she said, it was not about the cup.
