Chapter 2: The Envelope With the Worn Edges

The guests had stopped pretending not to stare.

The groom's hand was still shaking around the phone.

He couldn't look away from the photograph.

The little boy.

The woman.

The way her hand held his like she would never let go.

His bride stepped around him.

"Who is this person?" Her voice was sharp.

Controlled.

The kind of voice that expected an answer immediately.

He didn't give her one.

The woman in the brown coat kept her eyes only on him.

"I looked for you for eleven years," she said quietly.

"Every year.

Every city.

I never stopped."

The bride let out a short, hard laugh.

"This is our wedding day.

Security—"

"Let her speak." His voice came out low.

Final.

His bride went very still.

The woman reached slowly into her coat pocket and pulled out a small envelope.

Worn at the edges.

The seal had been opened and carefully closed again many times.

"Your father told you I left," she said.

"He told you I chose to go."

She held out the envelope.

"He lied."

The groom took it.

His fingers found a folded letter inside.

The handwriting on the first line was his father's.

The date at the top was three weeks after the hospital memory.

The last thing he could remember before she disappeared.

His bride's hand closed around his arm.

"Don't," she said.

Quietly.

Almost like a warning.

He looked at her.

Something shifted in her expression.

Just for a second.

Something that looked less like concern and more like fear.

What does that letter say — and why does his bride look afraid?
