I pulled up three months of payroll records the moment I sat down.
Rosa's name was there.
Every payment marked: *Processed.
Confirmed.
Transferred.*
But the account number attached to her name wasn't hers.
Someone had changed it.
I picked up the phone and called Harrison directly.
He answered on the second ring, voice smooth and unhurried.
"Sir.
What can I do for you?"
"My office.
Now."
A pause.
Just half a second too long.
"Of course.
Give me ten minutes."
"You have five."
I hung up and pulled the transfer records side by side.
Three months.
Twelve payments.
Every dollar redirected to the same unknown account — and every change had been logged under a single staff login.
Harrison's.
When he walked in, his expression was calm.
Too calm.
"There must be some kind of system error," he said before I could speak.
"I've noticed some irregularities myself.
I was actually going to bring this to your attention tomorrow."
I turned the screen toward him.
"Then explain why the account was changed the same week Rosa asked about her first missing payment."
His jaw tightened.
"I'd need time to look into—"
"Sit down, Harrison."
He didn't move.
Then, from the hallway just outside my office door, I heard a sharp intake of breath.
Someone had been listening.
And when I looked up, it wasn't a staff member standing in the doorway.
