Chapter 2: What the Photo Proved

Part 2 ⬇️
Ethan didn't move for a long moment.
Then, very quietly, he closed the dressing room door.
"Say that again," he said.
"Andrew," I whispered.
"Dr.
Vaughn.
Your foundation's guest of honor."
Something shifted in his face.
Not anger.
Something colder than anger.
"How long?"
I couldn't answer.
"Ava.
How long?"
"Please don't make me say it out loud."
He crossed the room in three steps and stood close enough that I could see his jaw tighten.
"Does anyone else know?"
"No one would believe me.
He's the miracle surgeon.
He saves children.
Everyone loves him."
Ethan said nothing.
He pulled out his phone, typed something, and put it away.
"What did you just do?" I asked.
"Nothing yet."
Downstairs, the applause grew louder.
Someone tapped a microphone.
A voice announced that the evening's program was beginning.
Andrew would be looking for me soon.
"Ethan, if you go down there and say something, he will make my life —"
"He won't."
"You don't know what he's capable of."
Ethan looked at me steadily.
"Neither does he."
Then my phone buzzed.
A message from Andrew.
*Where are you?
Get down here.
NOW.*
And beneath it, a photo.
One I had never seen before.
One that proved Andrew had known about Ethan and me long before tonight.
