Chapter 2: The Woman Who Turned Toward the Window

Grant didn't speak for a long time.

He just stood there, holding the photograph, his hand trembling slightly.

Then Evelyn moved.

She crossed the room and snatched the photo from his grip.

Her eyes scanned it once.

Twice.

"That's impossible," she whispered.

"Is it?" Rachel said.

"Because the DNA doesn't lie, Evelyn."

Evelyn's jaw tightened.

"Where did you get this?"

"The clinic sent Maddie's full results.

Twenty-three matches.

All strangers.

Except one."

The room went completely still.

Grant finally looked up.

"What are you saying, Rachel?"

"I'm saying Dr.

Vale didn't just treat your family.

He was connected to your family.

Long before we ever walked into that clinic."

Evelyn set the photograph face-down on the table.

That small, quiet movement told Rachel everything.

She knew.

Evelyn had always known.

"You chose him," Rachel said softly.

"Didn't you?

You recommended that clinic.

You gave us his name."

Evelyn said nothing.

Grant stepped toward his mother.

"Mom.

Tell me she's wrong."

Evelyn turned toward the window.

And that was when Rachel's phone buzzed.

A message from the clinic's patient advocate.

*Dr.

Vale's license was revoked in 2009.

Seventeen families are now involved in a formal investigation.

You are not the only one.*

Rachel looked at Grant.

"This is bigger than us."
