Chapter 2: She'll Be There Tonight

I didn't move.
Rebecca's smile held, but her eyes stayed fixed on my jacket pocket.
"Darling." Her voice dropped lower.
"Everyone is watching."
"I know," I said.
I took the note out and held it up.
Her face didn't break — not yet.
She glanced at the guests, then back at me, and when she spoke again her voice was barely above a whisper.
"She's a child.
She misunderstood."
"She's seven," I said.
"She read it to me word for word."
Emily hadn't let go of my collar.
Rebecca leaned closer.
"We can talk about this after.
Please.
Not here."
"After?" I looked at her.
"After I sign the certificate?
After it's legal?"
Something shifted behind her eyes.
Then my best man, Daniel, appeared at my shoulder.
He'd been standing near the side door.
I hadn't seen him walk over.
"There's something you need to know," he said quietly.
"Before this goes any further."
He held out his phone.
On the screen was a text thread — Rebecca's name at the top.
The last message had been sent forty minutes ago, right before the ceremony.
It was an address.
And below it, four words:
*She'll be there tonight.*
I looked at Rebecca.
For the first time, she said nothing.
