The security guard arrived in under two minutes.
I gave him the USB drive and told him to keep it safe until David asked for it.
Then I straightened my tie, picked up my boutonniere, and walked out of that lounge.
Mason was still in the hallway.
When he saw my face, his own went pale.
"Richard, just listen—"
"Not now," I said, and kept walking.
Vanessa was standing near the ballroom entrance in her dress, surrounded by two of her friends.
She looked beautiful.
She also looked like a woman who had just been caught doing something she couldn't explain.
Her eyes went straight to my hands, checking whether I still had the USB.
"Sweetheart," she said softly.
"Whatever you think you saw—"
"I didn't think anything," I said.
"I watched it."
Her expression shifted.
Just for a second.
Then the smile came back.
"Claire has always hated me.
You know that."
"I do," I said.
"I also know you just told me she spoke to me.
I never said that."
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
That was when David appeared at the far end of the corridor, one hand supporting Claire, who was pressing a folded cloth against the side of her head.
Toby ran ahead of them and grabbed my leg.
The guests inside the ballroom had no idea.
The music was still playing.
David looked at me and said quietly, "There's a second recording, Richard.
You need to hear it before you go in there."
