Chapter 3: What Anna Knew

Lily had fallen asleep by the time Detective Collins sat down across from me.

The room was quiet except for the soft rhythm of the monitors and the distant sound of the hospital corridor beyond the closed door.

Collins set a second folder on the table.

Thinner than the first.

She didn't open it immediately.

"Before Anna passed," she said, "did she ever mention concerns about the trust?

About who had access to it?"

I thought about it carefully.

"She set it up herself.

She was very specific about it.

Lily was the sole beneficiary.

I was the sole trustee.

She didn't want anyone else involved."

"Did she say why?"

"She said she didn't trust Evelyn with money." I paused.

"I thought she meant in general.

The way some people just don't trust their mothers."

Collins opened the folder.

Inside was a single handwritten letter.

The paper was slightly creased, as though it had been folded and unfolded many times.

"We found this in a safety deposit box registered in Anna's name," Collins said.

"The box was opened six weeks after her passing.

The person who opened it had a notarized authorization."

"Who?"

"Michael."

I looked at the letter.

Anna's handwriting.

I would have recognized it anywhere — the careful loops, the way she always pressed slightly too hard on the downstrokes.

"Can I read it?"

Collins slid it across the table.

*Daniel — if you are reading this, then something has gone wrong.

I hope I am wrong.

I have been wrong before and I would give anything to be wrong again.*

*Michael came to me three months ago.

He told me he was in serious financial trouble.

He asked me to loan him money from Lily's trust.

I told him that was not possible — the trust is Lily's, not mine to lend.

He became angry.

He said things I will not repeat here.*

*After he left, I checked the trust account.

One transfer had already been attempted.

It was declined because it required two-factor authorization.

I don't know how he got that far.*

*I spoke to my attorney.

I changed the authorization protocols.

I did not tell you because I did not want to believe it was real.*

*I should have told you.

I'm sorry.*

*If anything happens to me, please look at the trust first.

And please watch Michael.*

*I love you.

I love Lily.

Keep her safe.*

*Anna*

My hands were not entirely steady when I set the letter down.

"She knew," I said.

"She suspected," Collins said carefully.

"She took steps.

But she ran out of time."

"He was living in my house." The words came out slowly, like I was hearing them for the first time.

"He was picking Lily up from school.

He was sitting at my dinner table."

"I know."

"He watched me grieve her."

Collins said nothing.

She let the silence hold what it needed to hold.

Then Lily stirred in the bed.

She didn't wake fully, just shifted beneath the blanket and reached one hand toward the edge.

I moved to the chair beside her and took her hand.

"Detective," I said quietly, without turning around.

"What happens now?"

"We bring Michael in for questioning in the morning.

We have the forged documents, the notary connection, and the letter.

That's enough to start."

"And Evelyn?"

"She'll be arraigned tomorrow.

Her attorney has already made contact." Collins paused.

"She's asking for a deal."

I looked at Lily's face.

Peaceful now.

The swelling almost gone.

"What kind of deal?"

"She wants to give us Michael in exchange for reduced charges."

I turned around.

"She'll give up her own son?"

Collins's expression didn't change.

"She already has.

She gave us his name twenty minutes after we put her in the car."

I sat with that for a moment.

"Then she planned this knowing he could be sacrificed."

"Or," Collins said, "she planned it knowing that if it fell apart, she could use him as the exit."

The monitor beeped softly.

Lily's hand tightened slightly around mine in her sleep.

"Either way," Collins said, picking up her folder, "tomorrow is going to be a long day.

Try to get some rest."

She left.

May you like

The door clicked shut behind her.

I stayed in the chair beside my daughter and did not sleep at all.
