Chapter 2: The Fifth Complaint

The door swung open.

Principal Hargrove stepped in, phone in hand, his expression unreadable.

Every student in the room held their breath.

Mrs.

Vance straightened immediately, smoothing her jacket.

"Mr.

Hargrove, I was simply addressing a disciplinary—"

"I've seen the video," he said quietly.

The room went completely still.

Mrs.

Vance's mouth opened, then closed.

Her eyes darted to the classmate who had recorded her, then back to the principal.

"That clip is completely out of context," she said, her voice climbing.

"That boy has been disruptive all semester.

I was protecting the integrity of this program."

The boy said nothing.

He just looked down at the torn pieces of his letter still scattered across the floor.

Principal Hargrove crouched down and picked up one of the shreds.

He turned it over slowly in his hand, reading the university seal printed on the fragment.

He stood back up and looked directly at Mrs.

Vance.

"This wasn't the first complaint," he said.

"It was the fifth."

Mrs.

Vance went pale.

But before anyone could say another word, a phone buzzed loudly on the teacher's desk.

The screen lit up, facing the class.

Everyone could see the name on the notification.

It was the district superintendent.
