The results showed something I never expected.
Grant wasn't Evelyn's biological son.
He had been conceived at the same clinic.
By the same doctor.
The man who had fathered Maddie — and more than twenty other children — had also fathered Grant.
That meant Evelyn knew exactly who that doctor was.
She had always known.
I sat at the kitchen table staring at the papers when Grant walked in.
"Rachel.
Put those down."
"He's your biological father," I said.
"The same man.
The same clinic.
Maddie is your half-daughter by blood, not just by law."
He didn't deny it.
"How long have you known?" I asked.
He looked away.
"My mother told me the night before our wedding."
I couldn't breathe.
"She told you before we were married and you still let her treat Maddie like she was nothing?"
"I didn't know about Maddie's connection until last year."
"Last year." I repeated it slowly.
"You've known for a year."
Then my phone buzzed on the table.
It was a message from an unknown number.
*Rachel.
Stop digging.
My mother has documents that could destroy more than just your marriage.
You don't know what she's capable of.*
I looked up at Grant.
He was already reading it over my shoulder — and he didn't look surprised.
