Chapter 2: Something Colder Than Anger

The door to Room 204 burst open.

Principal Hargrove stood in the doorway, two police officers directly behind him.

The entire class froze.

Mrs.

Vance spun around, the ruler still in her hand.

For one brief second, her face showed something she rarely allowed — fear.

"Put that down," Principal Hargrove said quietly.

"Right now."

She set the ruler on the desk.

"This is a disciplinary matter.

You have no right to—"

"We have every right." The officer stepped forward.

"Ma'am, we need you to come with us."

The boy was still on his knees.

One of the students finally moved — a girl near the back — and whispered, "You can get up now.

It's over."

But it wasn't over.

As the officers guided Mrs.

Vance toward the door, she turned and looked directly at the quiet girl by the wall.

Her eyes dropped to the power cord.

Then back up.

"You," she said softly.

Not angry.

Something colder than anger.

The girl didn't flinch.

What no one in that room knew yet — not the principal, not the officers, not even the boy still trembling on the floor — was that Mrs.

Vance's son had been in that classroom too.

Watching everything.

And he had just pulled out his phone.

Not to call for help.

To make a call of his own.
