Chapter 2: The Name on the Signature Line

Part 2 ⬇️

I didn't sleep that night.

I sat at my desk until 4 a.m.

pulling every payroll record from Blackwell Domestic Services going back three years.

June wasn't the only one.

Fourteen names.

Fourteen employees.

All underpaid by the same margin.

All processed through the same internal account.

All signed off by the same man.

Marcus Hale.

My operations director.

My wife's cousin.

The man who had given the eulogy at her funeral and cried in the front row.

I called him at 6 a.m.

"Marcus.

I need you in my office.

Now."

A pause.

"Everything okay, Ethan?"

"Now, Marcus."

He arrived forty minutes later, suit already pressed, coffee in hand, smile already prepared.

He sat down across from me and set the cup on the desk like it was any other morning.

I turned the laptop screen toward him and said nothing.

His smile didn't disappear all at once.

It dissolved — slowly — the way ice does when you finally bring it into the light.

"Ethan—"

"How long?"

He opened his mouth.

"How long, Marcus?"

Then his eyes shifted — just slightly — to something behind me.

I turned around.

June was standing in the doorway with a small envelope in her hand.

Her face was pale.

"I found this in my locker this morning," she said quietly.

"I think you need to see what's inside."

What was in that envelope changed everything — and Marcus Hale never saw it coming.
