Chapter 2: Four Words That Stopped the Room

Her husband didn't move at first.

He just stood there, belt still in his hand, staring at the doors like he couldn't process what he was seeing.

Then his mother spoke.

"This is a private event.

You have no authority here."

The lead investigator didn't even look at her.

He walked straight to the center of the room and held up a document.

"We have a federal warrant.

Everyone stays where they are."

Her husband finally dropped the belt.

It hit the marble with a sound that echoed across the entire ballroom.

She didn't stand up right away.

She stayed on her knees, one hand pressed to her stomach, watching his face change from rage to something she had never seen on him before.

Panic.

His sister grabbed his arm and whispered something sharp into his ear.

He shook her off.

Then one of the investigators walked directly toward his mother — not his father, not him — and placed a second document on the table in front of her.

His mother looked down at it.

The champagne glass slipped from her fingers and shattered on the floor.

Nobody laughed this time.

Her father knelt beside her and said quietly, "Can you stand?"

She nodded.

But before she could move, her husband took one step forward and said four words that made the entire room go still.

"That child isn't mine."
