Chapter 1: The Bread She Carried
She was only four years old.
Every day, she secretly carried pieces of bread to a tiny vent in the kitchen wall.
"Don't cry…
I brought you bread," she whispered.
But when her mother caught her, she crushed the bread beneath her heel while the little girl clasped her hands and pleaded through tears.
Then her father came home.
He pulled his sobbing daughter into his arms—just as a tiny hand reached through the vent.
"Daddy…
help me…"
His wife went pale.
"Ryan—don't open it!"
