Chapter 2: What the Silence Confirmed

The silence stretched for what felt like a full minute.

Then her mother found her voice.

"That was different.

That was an argument.

You know what I meant."

"Do I?" I said.

"Because you were very clear.

You said, *he is not your father, and he never will be.*"

Her daughter made a small sound behind her.

Not a word.

Just air leaving her body.

Her mother spun around.

"Go to your room."

"Mom—"

"I said go."

But the girl didn't move.

She stood there holding her phone against her chest, looking at me with something I hadn't seen from her before.

Not anger.

Not embarrassment.

Something closer to shame.

Her mother turned back to me, lowering her voice now, trying to pull the moment back under control.

"We can talk about this later.

Right now she needs—"

"Two thousand dollars," I said.

"From someone who isn't her father."

Her mother's jaw tightened.

She reached for the list on the table.

And that's when her daughter spoke — quietly, almost to herself.

"Did you say that to him, Mom?

Did you really say that?"

Her mother didn't answer.

And the silence that followed was worse than anything she could have said.
