Chapter 1: She Came to the Wrong Door

She thought she was delivering the worst news of my life.
She had no idea she was already ten steps behind.
I heard the knock and opened the door to find a woman I didn't recognize standing on my porch, one hand on her hip, smiling like she already owned the conversation.
"Can I help you?"
"Yeah.
I've been seeing your husband."
I felt the words land somewhere, but not where she probably expected.
She kept going, clearly enjoying herself.
"Maybe if you were treating him right, he wouldn't be cheating on you."
I let that sit in the air for a moment.
"Okay.
Congratulations.
Why are you telling me?"
Her smile faltered, just slightly.
"Because he won't leave you.
So I figured you should know what's been going on behind your back."
I almost laughed.
For three months, I had been sitting across from a divorce attorney every other Thursday.
I had already moved half my savings into an account with my name only.
I had already photographed every piece of jewelry, every account statement, every text message he thought I'd never see.
I had known about her for six weeks.
I just hadn't decided yet whether she was worth confronting.
Apparently, she'd decided for me.
"I already knew," I said.
"The papers are almost signed."
She opened her mouth, but nothing came out.
I didn't wait for her to find something to say.
I stepped back and closed the door, slow enough for her to watch her own reflection disappear in the glass.
---
She came to destroy her — but this woman had already been three steps ahead for months.
