Chapter 2: The Words That Split the Room in Two

The guests were still frozen when Margaret finally moved.

She crossed the foyer slowly, her heels clicking against the marble, and stopped directly in front of Vanessa.

"How long?" Margaret's voice was barely above a whisper.

"How long have you been doing this to her?"

Vanessa's jaw tightened.

"You don't understand what she is to this family."

"I understand exactly what you are," Margaret said.

Daniel stepped between them.

He turned to Emily, his voice low and careful.

"Are you alright?"

Emily nodded, but her hand was still trembling against her cheek.

Then one of the older guests near the back spoke up — a woman no one had paid much attention to all evening.

"This isn't the first time."

The room shifted.

The woman stepped forward.

Her eyes were fixed on Vanessa.

"Six months ago.

The missing watch.

The dismissed housekeeper.

That was you too, wasn't it."

It wasn't a question.

Vanessa's expression cracked — just for a second.

But everyone saw it.

Daniel looked at the woman.

Then back at Vanessa.

"What else have you done?"

Vanessa straightened.

Lifted her chin.

And then she said something that made Emily's bl00d run cold.

"Ask Daniel what Emily really is to this house.

Then see whose side you're all on."
