He just looked at Serena — and something in his face made her step back.
"Victor, you have to understand—"

He crossed the room and lifted Ethan off the floor.
The baby grabbed his father's collar with both hands and buried his face in his neck.
Ethan didn't reach for Serena.
Not once.
Victor turned to the housemaid.
"What do you mean it wasn't the first time?"
The woman's hands were shaking.
She looked at Serena, then back at Victor.
"Sir…
we were told if we said anything, we'd be let go without a reference.
She said you'd believe her over any of us."
Serena laughed — sharp and thin.
"This is ridiculous.
You're going to take the word of the staff over me?"
Victor said nothing.
He was looking at Lily, still on the floor, one arm wrapped around her stomach.
"Can you stand?" he asked her quietly.
Lily nodded and tried to rise.
He reached down and helped her up himself.
That was when Serena's voice changed.
"You fire her tonight, or I walk."
The room went completely still.
Victor looked at her for a long moment.
