Chapter 2: What Was Sticking Out of Her Bag

I found the folder by accident.

My mother-in-law had left her bag on the kitchen chair.

A corner of a yellow envelope was sticking out.

I almost walked past it.

But something made me stop.

Inside was a custody petition.

My name was listed as "unfit." There were dates, signatures, and a letter from a lawyer I had never heard of.

The filing date was three weeks ago.

Three weeks.

While I was nursing our baby at 2am.

While I was cooking his mother's meals.

While I was smiling at the dinner table like everything was fine.

I confronted my husband that night.

"Did you know about this?"

He didn't answer.

He looked at the floor.

"How long?" I asked.

He finally said, "It wasn't supposed to go this far."

That sentence told me everything.

This wasn't his mother acting alone.

This was both of them.

And somewhere in that folder was a name I didn't expect — someone I had trusted completely.

My hands were shaking.

But I didn't cry.

I took out my phone and started photographing every page.

They thought I was too exhausted to fight back.

They were wrong.

What she found on the last page of that folder changed everything.
