I didn't move.
Rebecca's smile flickered.
She glanced at the guests, then back at me.
"Darling.
Everyone is watching."
"I know."
I looked down at Emily.
Her fingers were still locked around my collar.
"You're not going anywhere," I told her quietly.
"I promise."
Rebecca stepped closer and lowered her voice.
"We discussed this.
She needs structure.
The school I chose is excellent — she'll be happier there."
"You chose a school."
"For her benefit."
"Without telling me."
Her jaw tightened.
"We can talk about this after the ceremony."
"No," I said.
"We're talking about it now."
The priest cleared his throat.
A few guests shifted in their seats.
Rebecca's mother stood up near the front row, and something about the way she moved told me she already knew.
Then my phone buzzed in my pocket.
I pulled it out.
A message from a number I didn't recognize.
*She's been planning this since before she met you.
Ask her about the apartment.
Ask her whose name is on the paperwork.*
I looked up at Rebecca.
Her eyes dropped straight to my phone.
She knew exactly what it said.
