Chapter 2: The Third Document

The husband's hands were shaking.
"Where did you get that?" he said.
His voice came out smaller than he intended.
The businessman didn't answer him.
He looked only at the wife.
"Are you all right?"
She nodded once.
Her cheek was still red.
Her ring was still sitting on the table where she had left it.
The mother-in-law hadn't moved.
She was staring at the sealed document like it was something dangerous.
"This is a mistake," she said.
"My son built everything in this family.
Whatever that paper says, it's wrong."
"Is it?" The businessman turned the document around so the table could see it.
"This is the original property transfer.
Signed and witnessed.
Your son's name is not on it.

A relative near the far end of the table stood up slowly.
"Then whose name is on it?"
"Hers." He didn't point this time.
He didn't need to.
The husband took one step toward his wife.
"You need to let me explain—"
"Explain what?" she said quietly.
"That you let her h*t me in my own house?
That you watched and said nothing?"
He opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
Then the businessman reached into the folder one final time and placed a third document on the table.
The mother-in-law leaned forward to read it — and her face went completely still.
Whatever was written on that page, she recognized it immediately.
And she clearly wished she hadn't.
---
What's on that third document — and why did it silence her completely?
