Chapter 1: The Sl@p That Stopped the Room

She sl@pped a helpless orphan girl for breaking a four-thousand-dollar plate, never imagining the CEO was standing right behind her watching every second of it.

The sl@p was loud enough to stop a room full of millionaires from talking.

Sixteen-year-old Lily Carter stumbled backward against the marble kitchen island, one hand flying to her burning cheek while the other still clutched a white linen napkin.

For three terrible seconds, nobody moved.

Not the caterer holding a tray of champagne glasses.

Not the housekeeper standing beside the pantry.

Not the investment banker who had wandered in looking for the restroom.

And certainly not Vanessa Whitaker, whose diamond bracelet glittered beneath the kitchen lights as she raised her hand again.

"You careless little—"

"Vanessa."

The voice came from behind her.

It wasn't loud.

That made it worse.

Vanessa froze.

Everyone turned.

Grant Whitaker stood in the doorway wearing a charcoal overcoat over his black dinner suit, his phone still in one hand.

At forty-one, Grant was the CEO of Whitaker Development Group, a private real estate company that had transformed half the Atlanta skyline and made him one of the most recognizable businessmen in Georgia.

People were used to seeing him on magazine covers.

They were used to seeing him shake hands with investors, cut ribbons, negotiate nine-figure deals, and smile beside politicians at charity events.

They were not used to seeing him look like this.

His eyes moved from Vanessa's raised hand to Lily's face.

A red handprint was already appearing across the teenager's pale cheek.

Grant slowly set his phone on the counter.

"What," he asked, "did you just do?"

Vanessa lowered her arm.

Her shock lasted only a moment.

Then came indignation.

"She ruined one of your father's dinner plates."

Grant looked down.

A porcelain plate lay beside Lily's sneaker.

It wasn't shattered.

A tiny piece had chipped from the edge.

"That plate cost nearly four thousand dollars," Vanessa continued.

"And she was warned to be careful."

Lily swallowed.

"I'm sorry," she whispered.

Grant looked at her.

Something inside him changed.

"Don't apologize."

Lily blinked.

Vanessa scoffed.

"Grant, please.

You have forty guests in the next room.

Your board is here.

Investors are here.

Can we not turn this into a spectacle?"

Grant walked past her.

Then, in front of the caterers, the staff, his stepmother, and the guests gathering in the hallway, the CEO of Whitaker Development dropped to one knee beside an orphaned girl wearing a borrowed black dress and a stained white apron.

"Lily."

She still wouldn't look at him.

"Look at me."

Slowly, she raised her eyes.

Grant's anger nearly cracked.

He had known Lily for almost a year.

Yet in that moment, he realized he had barely known her at all.

He knew she earned straight A's.

He knew she liked old mystery novels.

He knew his father, Thomas, had taken her in after her parents were k*lled in a highway accident.

He knew she spoke softly, helped around the house without being asked, and always disappeared upstairs when guests arrived.

What he had never noticed was how quickly she flinched when an adult raised a hand.

Or how carefully she studied every expression in the room before deciding whether she was allowed to speak.

"Did she hurt you before tonight?" Grant asked.

Lily's face changed.

Barely.

But he saw it.

Vanessa saw it too.

"Oh, for heaven's sake," Vanessa snapped.

"You're interrogating the child like I h*t her every morning."

Grant stood.

"Did you?"

The kitchen seemed to lose all its air.

Vanessa stared at him.

"Excuse me?"

"Did you h*t her before tonight?"

"No."

Grant looked back at Lily.

"Lily?"

She stared at the floor.

Vanessa gave a humorless laugh.

"This is absurd.

She lives here for free.

She eats our food.

She attends an excellent school because your father felt sorry for her.

And now I'm apparently supposed to tolerate disrespect in my own home?"

Lily's face turned white.

Grant's head turned slowly toward his stepmother.

"Our home?"

"You know what I mean."

"No.

I don't think I do."

Vanessa folded her arms.

Grant's father, Thomas Whitaker, appeared at the end of the hallway.

At seventy-two, Thomas had officially retired from Whitaker Development five years earlier, though everyone knew the company still carried his instincts in its bones.

He had grown up poor, started his first contracting business with one pickup truck and two employees, survived two recessions, and eventually built an empire his son had expanded.

Tonight, however, Thomas did not look like a businessman.

He looked like an old man seeing something he should have seen months ago.

"What happened?" he asked.

Nobody answered immediately.

Then Lily whispered, "I chipped the plate."

Thomas saw her cheek.

His expression collapsed.

"What happened to your face?"

What does Thomas do when he finds out the truth about Vanessa?

And what has Lily been hiding all this time?
