Chapter 2: The Folder on the Table

PART 2 ⬇️
That night, Luca called.
I almost didn't answer.
"I need to show you something," he said.
"Not over the phone."
I met him the next morning at a coffee shop far from Aurelia.
Far from anyone who knew either of us.
He placed a folder on the table.
Inside was a photocopy of a medical report.
My name.
My date of birth.
A clinic letterhead I recognized.
And a diagnosis I had never received.
"This is what my mother gave me," Luca said.
"Seven years ago."
My hands wouldn't stop shaking.
"There's more." He turned to the second page.
A bank transfer.
Fifty thousand dollars.
His mother's name on one side.
A clinic administrator on the other.
"She paid someone to forge your records, Nia."
I couldn't speak.
"I confronted her this morning."
"What did she say?"
His jaw tightened.
"She said she did what she had to do to protect the family name."
I stared at him.
"She never thought you were good enough.
She wanted me free before the business went public." His voice dropped.
"She didn't know you were already pregnant when I left."
The coffee shop felt very small.
"Luca."
"I know."
"She took six years from your children."
He closed his eyes.
"I know."
Then his phone buzzed on the table.
He glanced at the screen and went completely still.
It was a message from his mother.
Four words.
*I need to talk.*

What did Luca's mother say next — and does she know the twins exist?
The truth gets darker from here.
