Chapter 2: That's the Other One

I didn't walk out that door.

I stood there, holding Chloe against my chest, and I looked at my wife.

"More names," I said.

"Say them."

Meredith's eyes filled with tears.

But they weren't the right kind of tears.

They were the tears of someone who had been caught, not someone who was sorry.

"I can't," she whispered.

"Harrison, you don't understand what they're capable of."

"Say.

The names."

She flinched.

Outside, the horn honked again.

Longer this time.

Chloe pressed her face harder into my neck and made a sound I will never forget.

Not a cry.

Something smaller.

Like an animal that had learned crying didn't help.

That sound made my decision for me.

I carried her to the kitchen, sat her on the counter, and picked up my phone.

"What are you doing?" Meredith grabbed my arm.

"Calling the police."

"Harrison, stop—" Her voice cracked.

"If you call them tonight, Richard will release the photos.

He told me what's in them.

He said he would destroy you.

He said he would make sure Chloe never—"

She stopped herself.

I went completely still.

"Never what, Meredith?"

She looked at the floor.

"He said she'd never be believed."

I dialed anyway.

But before the call connected, a knock came at the front door.

Not the bell.

A knock.

Three slow, deliberate knocks.

Chloe grabbed my shirt with both fists.

"That's not Grandpa's knock," she whispered.

"Then who is it?"

She looked up at me with eyes that were far too old for her face.

"That's the other one."
