Chapter 2: What Was Hidden in the Dark

The officer crouched down beside the doghouse and reached into the dark corner behind it.

He pulled out a small plastic box — locked, with a combination dial.

"Sir," he said quietly, turning to the father.

"Do you know what this is?"

The father shook his head.

He had never seen it before.

They broke the lock open.

Inside were photographs.

Dozens of them.

The little girl — alone in the yard, locked outside, in the rain, in the cold.

Date stamps going back almost two years.

Someone had been documenting everything.

The father's hands were shaking.

"Who took these?"

Her voice was barely a whisper.

"The lady next door.

The mother's face went pale.

One of the officers stepped toward her.

"Ma'am, we're also going to need you to answer some questions about a report filed eight months ago.

A report that was never followed up on."

The father turned slowly.

"What report?"

The officer hesitated.

"Sir…

your daughter was brought to the emergency room eight months ago.

The notes say it was an accident."

The father looked down at his little girl.

She looked up at him — and said nothing.

But her eyes said everything.

---

What really happened eight months ago — and who else knew the truth while Dad was kept in the dark?
