Chapter 1: The Boy Who Made Himself Small

She left my son off the family vacation like he was an afterthought — and gave me an ultimatum when I refused to accept it.
I was standing at the kitchen table, sorting through the printed tickets for our trip, when I noticed something was wrong.
"Wait, where is my son's ticket?"
Vanessa didn't even glance up from her phone.
"He's not coming on this trip."
I stared at her, waiting for the rest of the sentence that never came.
"Your boy gets a vacation, but mine stays behind?"
From the hallway, Caleb's small voice reached us before I even knew he'd been listening.
"It's okay, dad."
I turned to him, and something in his face — that quiet willingness to disappear so nobody would have to choose him — made the decision easier than it should have been.
"My son is part of this family.
He is not optional."
Vanessa finally looked up.
"These tickets can't be refunded, and there are no more bookings available."
"I am not leaving him behind."
She set her phone down slowly, her voice going flat and final.
"If you take his side, then we are done."
I didn't hesitate.
"Then pack your things and get out of my house."
Her mouth opened, but nothing came out.
She looked at me like she'd read the wrong ending to a story she thought she already knew.
I stepped past her and crouched down in front of Caleb, pulling him into a hug.
"You and I are going somewhere together this weekend, just us."
Vanessa was still standing in the kitchen when we left the room.
