Chapter 2: The Woman Who Ran
Claire met his stare and didn't look away.
"My name is Claire Bennett.
I'm a nurse.
I pulled your son out of the river."
Roman said nothing.
He handed Ethan to one of his men without breaking eye contact with her.
"She pushed me," a voice said.
Claire went cold.
She turned.
A woman in a black coat stood near the second SUV.
Older.
Composed.
Watching Claire with flat, careful eyes.
"I saw it happen," the woman said.
"She was on the railing.
She pushed him and then jumped in after."
"That is a lie," Claire said.
"I never touched him before he hit the water."
Roman looked at the woman.
Then back at Claire.
"Lena doesn't lie to me."
"Then Lena is the one who ran," Claire said.
"Because someone was already running when I got to that railing.
And it wasn't me."
The silence was suffocating.
Then one of the armed men stepped forward and held up a phone.
Footage from the security camera.
Roman watched it.
His jaw tightened.
He watched it again.
When he looked up, his eyes moved — not to Claire.
To Lena.
Something shifted in Lena's face.
Just for a second.
But Claire saw it.
