Chapter 1: The Iron and the Innocent

She caught her boss's wealthy fiancée endangering a child, but the innocent act turned into a twisted game of lies.

"Get away from that baby right now!"

My scream shattered the pristine silence of the grand nursery inside the Vance estate.

My heart pounded against my ribs like a trapped bird as I sprinted across the polished marble floor.

Standing beside the white wooden crib was Victoria.

She looked breathtaking in her custom beaded, shoulder-draped champagne gown—the very dress she was supposed to wear down the aisle in less than two hours to marry Ethan Vance, one of the wealthiest real estate moguls in Chicago.

Her blonde hair was styled in an elegant half-updo, but her face was twisted into a mask of pure, unadulterated malice.

In her right hand, she gripped a heavy steam iron.

White vapor hissed softly from its base, sending a wave of scorching heat into the air.

The iron was hovering just inches above the bare chest of baby Leo, Ethan's six-month-old son.

"Keep your mouth shut if you want to keep your job!" Victoria snapped, her voice dropping into a harsh, venomous hiss.

She didn't lower the iron.

Instead, she leaned closer over the crib rail, her dark eyes flashing with warning.

"You take one more step, Clara, and I'll make sure you're fired before the first guest even sits down."

"I will never let you hurt him!" I cried out, lunging forward without a second thought.

I thrust my body between Victoria and the crib, using my hands to block her arm.

The heat radiating off the metal plate made the skin on my face sting.

In the crib below us, little Leo was screaming, his cheeks flushed red, his tiny fists flailing in absolute terror as the steam drifted over his blanket.

Victoria glared down at me, her red-painted lips curling into a sneer of utter contempt.

"You are just a worthless servant!

You think Ethan cares about your opinion?

You're a maid in a gray dress, Clara.

You clean our toilets and fold our sheets.

Get out of my way!"

"You are a monster for doing this!" I yelled back, holding my ground despite the scorching heat inches from my forearm.

"He's just an innocent baby!

He lost his mother six months ago!"

"And he's an obstacle!" Victoria spat under her breath, her grip tightening on the handle of the iron.

"Ethan spends every waking second worrying about this little brat instead of paying attention to me.

As long as this baby exists, I'll always be second place in this house!"

"What is going on in this room right now?"

A deep, commanding voice boomed from the nursery doorway.

I turned my head sharply.

Ethan Vance stood on the threshold, looking striking in his black tux and bowtie.

His sharp jawline was set, and his hazel eyes narrowed as he took in the horrifying scene.

Before I could speak, Victoria's entire demeanor transformed in a split second.

The cold, vicious glare melted away, replaced by trembling lips, wide tear-filled eyes, and a look of terrified innocence.

She pulled the iron back, her hands shaking dramatically.

"Ethan!" Victoria sobbed, taking a theatrical step toward him and pressing a trembling hand against her chest.

"Thank God you're here!

Your maid att@cked me out of nowhere!

I was just ironing out a wrinkle on the blanket near the crib, and she rushed in like a madwoman and shoved me!"

I gasped, turning to face Ethan.

"Sir, that's a lie!

She tried to burn your baby with a hot iron!"

Ethan stepped rapidly into the room, his eyes darting between the crying baby, Victoria in her wedding dress, and me standing defensively in front of the crib.

"Is this the truth, Victoria?" Ethan demanded, his voice dropping into a dangerous, low tone.

Victoria threw her hands up in dramatic disbelief, tears spilling down her cheeks onto her designer dress.

"Why would you believe a maid over me?!

Ethan, we're getting married today!

I love Leo!

Why would I ever hurt your son?

She's crazy, Ethan!

She's jealous because she has a crush on you!

She's trying to ruin our wedding day!"

Ethan didn't answer right away.

He walked slowly past Victoria, stepping toward the crib.

But as he reached out to scoop up his crying son, his eyes caught something resting on the ivory velvet sofa right beside the changing table.

A dark, black scorch mark in the perfect shape of an iron was burned deep into the expensive fabric, still smoking faintly.

Ethan froze.

He slowly turned his head to look at Victoria.

"Look at the mark on the sofa," Ethan said, his voice terrifyingly quiet.

Victoria's face drained of all color.

Her mouth opened, but no sound came out for several seconds.

"It...

it was an accident, I swear!" she stammered, backing away slowly.

"I tripped over the cord!

I lost my balance!"

"You didn't trip," Ethan growled, his eyes burning with dark, fury-filled rage.

"You held it over my son's crib."

He took a step toward her, his chest heaving under his tuxedo jacket.

"You are d*ad to this family forever, Victoria.

Get out of my house."

Victoria's eyes went wide with sheer terror as Ethan pulled out his phone, his thumb hovering over the dial pad.

"Please don't call the police!" Victoria gasped, falling to her knees on the marble floor, her gown spreading around her like a pool of ruined silk.

"Ethan, please!

I'll leave!

I'll disappear!

Just don't ruin my life!"

Ethan ignored her, raising the phone to his ear.

"Security, get up to the second-floor nursery immediately.

And call the Chicago Police Department."

Victoria scrambled to her feet, looking at Ethan with pure hatred before turning her eyes toward me.

"You ruined everything, Clara," Victoria whispered in a voice so cold it made the hair on my arms stand up.

"You have no idea who my family is.

You think you saved him?

You just signed your own death warrant."

She turned and sprinted out of the nursery, the heavy wooden doors slamming shut behind her.

Ethan immediately rushed to the crib, picking up little Leo and pulling him tightly against his chest.

He rocked his sobbing baby, whispering sweet, soothing words while resting his forehead against the infant's head.

I stood by the changing table, my hands still shaking, my breath coming in ragged gasps.

Ethan turned to look at me, his hazel eyes filled with profound gratitude and lingering shock.

"Clara...

thank you.

God, if you hadn't been here..."

"I'm just glad Leo is safe, Mr.

Vance," I managed to say softly, stepping forward to help him soothe the baby.

He looked down at me, a soft, complex emotion passing over his features.

"Call me Ethan, Clara.

Please."

Just as Ethan lowered Leo into his arms, a sudden, sharp shatter echoed from the hallway outside.

It sounded like glass breaking downstairs—followed by the heavy, ominous thud of footsteps climbing the marble staircase.

Ethan's eyes widened, and he immediately pushed me behind his back.

Victoria threatened Clara and walked out — but those footsteps on the stairs aren't security.
