Chapter 2: The Message on Marguerite’s Phone

Vanessa recovered quickly.
“You’re making a scene over nothing,” she said, forcing a smile as our guests watched.
“Lily needs discipline, and Marguerite keeps undermining me.”
“Is that what you call frightening a seven-year-old?”
“She’s too sensitive.
Just like her mother was.”
Lily flinched.
My hands tightened at my sides.
“Never speak about her mother that way again.”
Vanessa’s smile vanished.
“You should be thanking me.
Everyone knows you can barely manage your own life, let alone a child.”
A few guests looked away.
Others stared at me, waiting for the d*adbeat they had heard about to lose control.
Instead, Marguerite reached into her pocket.
“There’s something you need to see,” she said.
She held out her phone.
On the screen was a message Vanessa had sent that morning:
“Once we’re married, Marguerite is gone.
Then Lily will finally learn to obey me.”
Vanessa lunged for the phone, but I took it first.
“You went through my private messages!” she cried.
“No,” Marguerite replied.
“You sent it to me.”
Then Lily tugged my sleeve, trembling.
“Daddy,” she whispered, “that isn’t the worst thing Vanessa said.”
Every voice in the garden stopped.
