Chapter 2: The Video on the Stone Table

Part 2 — continued in comments ⬇️

Genevieve's legs nearly gave out beneath her.

She grabbed Julian's arm.

"This is insane.

You're choosing her over me?

Over a woman scrubbing floors?"

Julian removed her hand.

Calmly.

Like he was lifting something unclean.

"I'm not choosing anyone," he said.

"You made that choice yourself.

I watched the whole thing from the window."

The color drained from Genevieve's face.

Meredith said nothing.

She simply pulled a phone from her apron pocket and set it face-up on the stone table between them.

The screen showed a video.

Timestamp.

Clear audio.

Genevieve's own voice — sharp and vicious — calling Meredith a worthless peasant.

Every word.

Recorded.

"I sent it to the family attorney twenty minutes ago," Meredith said quietly.

"He's already reviewed the prenuptial clause."

Genevieve spun toward Julian.

"You can't be serious.

She set me up—"

"No one set you up," Julian said.

"You did exactly what you always do.

I just finally let you."

Then his phone buzzed.

He glanced at the screen and went very still.

He looked up at Genevieve with something she had never seen in his eyes before.

Not anger.

Not disappointment.

Pity.

"There's something else," he said.

"Something Meredith found last week.

About you.

About where you were the night you claimed to be in Edinburgh."
