Chapter 2: The Name on the Envelope

"Don't move."

Ethan's voice was quiet.

That made it worse.

Madison stopped with her hand on the door.

She turned slowly, and for the first time, her smile was completely gone.

"Ethan, I can explain—"

"You were asking about the documents."

"I was curious.

That's all.

You know how I—"

"Clara." He didn't look away from Madison.

"How many times has this happened?"

Clara was still on the floor.

Noah crouched beside her, his small hand pressed against hers.

She didn't answer.

Noah did.

"Four times, Mr.

Ethan.

She always waits until you leave."

The room went still.

Ethan walked to the side table near the staircase and pulled open the drawer.

He removed a small envelope — already opened — and held it up.

"Is this what you came for?"

Madison's eyes locked onto it instantly.

That reaction told him everything.

"I found this taped under the kitchen shelf three days ago," Ethan said.

"I've been waiting to understand why it was there."

He turned the envelope over.

A name was written on the back.

Not Madison's name.

Clara's.

What was inside that envelope — and why did someone hide it with Clara's name on it?
