Chapter 2: The Call He Didn't Expect

Richard's hand was shaking.
Not much.
Just enough for me to notice.
The voice on the satellite phone spoke only four words: "Authorization confirmed.
Proceed freely."
I looked at Richard.
He had heard it too.
"Who are you?" he said.
His voice had lost its edge.
"Someone who retired," I told him.
"Someone who hoped he'd never have to come back."
He stepped closer, still holding the documents.
"Those papers are legally binding.
Lily has a history.
Everyone here will testify—"
"Everyone here," I said, "is already on that recording."
His mother appeared in the doorway behind him.
Expensive dress.
Cold eyes.
She looked at the satellite phone in my hand, then at her son, and something passed between them that told me she knew exactly what Richard was capable of.
"Richard," she said quietly.
"Stop talking."
But Richard didn't stop.
"You're an old man," he said.
"You have no authority here."
I looked down at Lily in my arms.
Her eyes were half open.
She whispered one word.
"Dad."
That was enough.
I turned toward my car.
Behind me, I heard Richard shout something to the police chief.
I heard footsteps on the gravel.
Then I heard a second phone ring.
Not mine.
The police chief's.
He answered it.
Said nothing for a long moment.
Then said, "Yes, sir.
Understood."
The footsteps stopped.
